Expanding Credit Union Cooperation

PreConference Workshop
Presented by Tom Glatt, Jr.
Executive Consultant/Owner, Glatt Consulting, LLC
(Separate Registration Required)

There is a school of thought running throughout the industry that maintains credit union cooperation is truly a thing of the past. We no longer really cooperate, and the cooperatives that were created to serve the industry in the past are now more capitalistic than cooperative. What if cooperation could return us to a pricing advantage over our competition? What if we took all non-member related functions and turned them over to a true credit union cooperative? What if, for example, we hired one compliance team to serve a handful of credit unions rather than a team for each? What if we hired one outstanding HR team rather than each investing in our own HR department? In this session Tom Glatt, Jr. will explore this important issue, reviewing specific situations where, by cooperating with other credit unions, you can reduce certain operating expenses by more than 50 basis points. In this expansive session, you’ll cover the foundation and drivers for a return to cooperation, including:

  • Margin Squeeze

  • Declining support for cooperative principles

  • Use of third parties for outsourcing

  • Maximizing the distinctive credit union charter

  • Making better use of excess capital

  • The institutional benefits of a 50 basis point expense reduction
